No sooner had I returned home to rest for the day that the phone rang. On the other end I heard the distressed voice of Roger as he asked for help. I responded and went to his home right away. It is Roger’s pain and suffering that calls us to action.
This is Roger’s story. It is the flash point that ignited the desire to run and fulfil Roger’s wish.
Roger has been a cancer survivor for many years. But when Roger fell and broke his hip he was reluctant to seek medical help. After several home visits and interventions. Roger reluctantly agreed to surgical hip repair. Following the hip repair Roger was transferred to an intermediate care facility to continue treatment and rehabilitation that would help him “get stronger”.
After being at the facility for over four weeks, Roger felt he was not being well treated and signed out against medical advice. Roger told facility staff, “If I call my Nurse, she’ll know what to do.” Roger left the facility and headed home. That’s when I got the call.
An assessment of Roger’s condition revealed old crusted blood around the stiches from the surgical hip repair. His wounds had not been attended to and the dressings appeared unchanged. A call was made right away to Roger’s MD, Dr. Toby.
Dr. Toby ordered that Roger be brought to his clinic immediately. Our care team hired an ambulance and Roger was transported to the clinic where his wounds were cleaned and the stiches removed. Having received the appropriate treatment, Roger smiled and said “You saved my life. I told you my Nurse would know what to do.” With coordinated care between Dr. Toby, clinicians and physical therapists, Roger received the care he required and deserved.
Roger asked, “Why can’t you open a place for people like me and care for them the way you care for me?” Roger stated that having caregivers assist him with food preparation, bathing, grooming and exercises, as well as listening with empathy makes him “Look Good and Feel Good”.
Roger’s wish and request to build a place so others can experience healing in a nurturing environment while ameliorating their pain and suffering inspired us to embark on project
